Sports bag as carry on and a single strap backpack as personal item?

so im flying to CO. under armor sports bag as carry on and a single strap backpack as personal item?
my sports bag meets the dimensions for a carry on.
is my backpack a personal item?
its single straped and only has blankets (for camp) along with my under garments.
oh and im flying united airlines

    That will work. Theoretically, you’ll have to put one of the items under the seat in front of you.
